Bracketing a WR is when a reciever runs a slant, out, in, post, in the area where a CB and safety is the CB gets in front of the WR while the Safety is over the top and they follow that receiver for as long as the QB focuses on that WR or until that CB passes that WR to the LB and that safety passes the WR to the other safety, the trick is the CB cant pass the receiver to the LB until the LB sees the WR coming in to his area or until the QB takes his eyes off him and looks to the opposite side of the field NOT THE MIDDLE OF THE FIELD, if the QB looks in the middle the CB still has to stay on the WR until the LB sees the WR, if the LB doesnt see him the CB has to stay on that reciever leaving his side of the field wide open for another WR to go into his area and catch the ball but that CB is still responsible for covering that area of the field, In the NFL, no.1 WR's are the ones that is getting bracketed in cover 3, cover 4 and cover 8 most of the time.

Now splitting a WR is when a defense is playing zone and a CB has 2 WR in his area depending on the position of those WR's if that CB has a WR running a out or an out post and he has a running back or a TE running a 5-8yd route in the flats, that CB has to get in between the WR, and the Running Back or TE and try to prevent a pass being thrown over the top of him to the WR with no safety help and at the same time stop a pass being thrown to the RB or TE in the 5-8 yds flats, this is especially difficult when its short yardage cause the CB cant get beat deep but at the same time try to prevent a pass to the flats for a first down.

This is why in the NFL, zone is harder than man, cause its alot of strategy, thinking and relying on your teammates more, there is no thinking in man D, all you do is cover the man in front of you and not fall for the double move, if you ask ANY NFL PLAYER, THEY WILL TELL YOU ZONE IS HARDER BECAUSE OF BRACKETING AND SPLITTING. There you have it.
