- If it's Cover 1, there will only be 1 safety over the top. This is primarily man-to-man coverage. The way to tell is pretty much self-explanatory as you will only see 1 defender in the middle of the field once you come out of the huddle. He is responsible for covering both halves.
- If it's Cover 2, you will notice both safeties in deep zones. The easiest way to tell is once you come out of the huddle, look at the safeties and the corners. If none of them moves, most likely it's cover 2. However, once the ball is snapped, if the FS goes toward the left half of the field and the SS floats towards the right side, it's a cover 2.
- If it's a Cover 3, you will notice that the SS will dip below closer to the LOS and the FS will move over to the center. In this coverage, either both corners and the FS are responsible for covering a 1/3 of the field each, OR in some cases, 1 CB, the FS and the SS are responsible for covering 1/3 of the field each.
- If it's a Cover 4, the easiest way to tell is once you come out of the huddle, notice both corners; they will back off the LOS and prepare to drop back in coverage once the ball is snapped. Once the ball is snapped, both CBs and both safeties will drop back deep and protect the 4 areas of the field.
I hope this helps.........
