| cover 1 = one safety rotates to the middle of the field. cover 2 = two safeties stay at even depth. cover 3 = one safety rotates to the middle of the field and one or both CBs move. cover 4 = two safeties stay at even depth and one or both CBs move. | |

| I'll just copy and paste from a long post I wrote about them.
Man-Man defense.. there are a few variations. This is when each player has a man that they follow and guard. It is used effectively when pressure is brought because anyone can juke 1 guy if given time.
Cover 0-0 men protecting deep..everyone in man, there are only a few of these plays.. usually involving heavy pressure or double coverage.
Cover 1- 1 man deep. In madden it's 1 dark blue zone by a safety. Everyone else is either in a short zone or man coverage or blitzing. The 1 safety will be middle of the field deep, so the sidelines are vulnerable deep if the coverage gets beat over the top.
Cover 2-2 men deep. In madden it's 2 dark blue zones by both safeties usually. They each guard half of the field deep. Everyone else is either in a zone or man or blitzing. It's usually a very safe coverage that doesn't give up lots of big plays. Indy uses it in their bend but don't break defense. It is vulnerable up the middle deep because the safeties retreat to each sideline.
Cover 3-3 men deep. There are TONS of cover 3's. The plays labelled cover 3 are VERY safe plays. They drop 7 or 8 men into coverage. It has 3 dark blues. Each corner takes its respective sideline and then a safety takes deep third. You can have many different combos of blitz, zone blitz, man, etc. with cover 3. Even engage 8 is technically a cover 3.
Cover 4-4 men deep. There are a few cover 4's, it involves both outside corners and both safeties dropping into dark blues. The deep part of the field is segmented into fourths and each one is responsible for their own. If they all retreat, underneath is VERY vulnerable. Usually only the LB's are underneath unless it's velcro 9.
If you notice, each # associated with a coverage is how many segments the deep part of the field is divided into by the coverage..and also it signifies how many men are deep. So cover 1-1 part of deep field, 1 guy deep. Cover 2- 2 halves of deep field, 2 guys deep. Cover 3-3 thirds of deep field, 3 men deep. Etc.
Cover 1 can be used any time, great for bringing heat and stopping deep routes before developing...you better get there though! Cover 2 provides great underneath coverage if a guy is burning you short, don't let guys get up the seam! Cover 3 is good all around, weak-ish vs the run but has very few weak spots..Cover 4 is almost like a prevent, use it sparingly unless someone tries endzone every play. Cover 0 is everyone in man, very risk-reward... nobody is deep, so if separation is made it's a TD. Usually there is very big pressure coming, so it HAS to get there.
Hope this helps. | |
