This has always bothered me, and I feel like venting a little.
In the sport of football in general, a big play on offense occurs usually when the offense out-smarts or out-finesses the defense. The big play rarely occurs because of an offensive player being faster than a defensive player who is in good position, but is just too slow to keep up.
In Madden, this is the total opposite. There are a handful of players who can bust out 2 or 3 50 yard plus TD plays per game- Moss, Fitz, Calvin, Chris Johnson, T.O., Steve Smith, and a few others. There are far to many other offensive players, even guys who are 90 OVR or better, who can only break out a big play once in a friggin' blue moon.
Basically, in order to be a big play threat in Maden, an offensive player has to fall into one of the following skill sets:
95 Speed or faster
or
90 Speed or faster, Plus 6'3" or Taller
or
90 Speed or faster, Plus 90 Jump or better
The result is, Felix Jones or Chris Johnson are far more likely score on a big run than general purpose backs like Ronnie Brown or Maurice Jones Drew.
Matt Jones is far more likely to catch a deep ball for a TD than Reggie Wayne.
I've gotta spotlight Devin Hester and back the safety off on his side so that he doesn't score on me, but any normal average corner can cover Hines Ward, who is ten times better than Hester in real life.
I think they should focus a little bit on changing this in future madden games. Speed and Height mean way too much in Madden, and ratings like route running, awareness, catch, catch in traffic, and release seem to not amount to jack $hit.
