jsut watch where your oppenent is blitzing the most and slide protect to that way, and as for some running different slide protections will mkae ur lineman pick up different defenders. So you will jsut have to get a feel for that in practice mode. But alot of the time just slide protect to where the bltiz is coming the most and your blocking will be alot better

LINE PROTECTION TIPS Empty
PostSubject: Re: LINE PROTECTION TIPS   LINE PROTECTION TIPS Empty2009-12-30, 18:09

There are four factors that I use to determine what to run, how to run, and what line protection to use: Running Back-Play Chosen- Defense stregths/weakness- Slide Protection.

1st. The Running Back I use determines what plays I run a majority of the time
ex: If I have AP or a top RB I can run anything
But if I have a speedster(Leon Washington) Sweeps,tosses,some counter
Slow, trucking, break tackle back than Power, Smash, Up the Gut, etc

2nd. In the beginning of the game I determine where the defense is strong and where I am weak so I know where most of my plays are going to go. So if they have good DTs then I have to get to the outside. So if I have a speedster it won't be a problem because I am already running sweeps and tosses. If I am a slow back then I am running Power O or Smash from I-Form and trying to either get to a DE instead of the DT or bringing the extra blocker(FB) to help with the DT.

If you are getting to the outside I look at two things and I only pay attention to DEs and OLBS, sometimes MLBs. But if you want to get to the outside you will try to go to the side where the DE is slower and OLB is slower... but even if they are slower pay attention to there awareness. If they have a high awareness it doesnt matter how slow they are because they may in good position from the beginning and be able to shed their blocker. That is why I also pay attention to high rated MLB because in man coverage the RB is usually their assignment.

3rd. So what do I do if I have a speedster and they have good DEs or OLBs... you slide protection. Yes I believe it is easy but you have to know what you want to accomplish and what type of play is ran. So a simple guide:

A: If you are running Power O or any running play where two linemen are pulled you need to pinch the protection. Many newbies wonder why they are getting sacked a third of the time and the play breaks down after two yards another third, this is why. Think about it, if you are pulling two guys who blocks the two defensive linemen? So if you are pulling two you NEED to pinch and believe me a wall usually opens up where the running back will likely get 6 yards everytime. If you are pulling one linemen it usually isnt as necessary

B: If you are doing a sweep then you need to slide towards the sweep... easy enough. And for those of you who run a sweep with one lineman pulling, you usually dont have to pinch and could just slide towards the sweep. If someone gets through they will likely run into the QB when the RB has the ball already.

C: Running Smash, Up the Gut,etc then it depends on what you want. You already checked the defense and seen that they are weak up front but their LBs are good then you may want to leave as is. If you want to take a chance and get good yards then you will slide Aggressive because this opens the lanes for you BUT it also opens the lanes for LBs(usually MLB) also. You want short yardage? Then you will usually pinch.

D: Counters(my favorite because not everyone knows how to run them) The secret to the counter is to slide protection AWAY because that is where the run is supposed to look like it is going but when the running back cuts back he should be in the clear.

E. Draws are a definate slide aggressive so that there are open lanes.

Some other points:
* Be weary of counters or delayed handoffs because even the great linemen on the opposite side of the play can chase down the back from behind

*Do like in a real football game, count the number of defenders in the box and on which side of the center. Think about your blockers and try to think about getting your runner a one on one against the last defender or just getting into the secondary.

*I use a FB who is great at blocking so I use him a lot. I also put him in at TE because his run blocking and usually his pass blocking is usually better then my receiving TE. My second TE is usually a blocking TE too. If you have either then use them. If you have both use them both. If you have the TE put him in a FB on running plays. If you have the FB use him at TE at times or even a Tackle or Guard if you know they wont be receiving just for the extra blocker. Oh and while you are at it put your best blocking WR or even that receiving TE at wideout to keep the corner occupied. I always make sure the extra blocker is going where the play is going.

On Singleback I use my FB on one side and TE on the other. On a sweep I will just motion one to the other side and now have two extra blockers on that side.

On I-Form I take my receiving TE out and my blocking TE in on running plays. Now I have my FB and TE. Unless I have a running FB and my receiving TE blocking is better than my FB then I will put my Blocking TE at FB.

On I-Form big with the two TEs on one side. I always put in my Tackles or Guards at both TE spots. Run Power O and you have a garunteed 5 yds if not more but make sure you pinch the protection or you can look at -1 or -2 usually.

*The most important note to remember is everyone is looking at this like this all seems predictable. Yes this is very predictable and you will get yards out of it but it is better to get even more yards when you are doing this and changing everything and motioning... and still PASS the ball. That is where I get the most yards. Eight men in the box because they know a run is coming and you have your fastest receiver out there and burn the one on one coverage even with the saftey over the top and you had all the protection in the world because of the changes made. Don't be predictable. Either they will give up the 8 yd gain or the 25 yd touchdown.

Hopefully my very 1st post was more than informative.

Fine, I'll give the theory behind Power O.

The blocking on this running play is basically the same as with Counter plays, but with no fake step. You want to slide protect away so your blockers seal the players on the backside, while the pulling lineman takes care of the unblocked guy.

Thank you. I tried to put as much info in there. Madden gives that ability of real football and putting in your specialists. I used '08 and '09 in the same way. If you cant get the lineman of your choice I didnt want to get a balanced player. I got a great run blocker and great pass blocker at that position. Then just switched them according to the situation.

I think this is important for 10 just because of the adjustments that need to be made. LE is likely the weakest position in Madden but if you look at OLB numbers they make great DEs. That goes for a lot of offensive lineman who are not at their natural position but if you look at their ratings you will see where they are better.
