| ClavinandHobbes Long Post on OToday I will start my long post on O…this should help mainly nOObs, but everyone should learn something…first off….feel free to contribute….
- Mix the Run and Pass
Ok I always try to Run and Pass once every drive, in my WCO the pass takes the front and in my RHO the run takes the front. If you do not mix the run and the pass you will lose; that simple! Even with the perfect money-play, it will be stopped and you will lose.
Greater than 6 men in the box, pass, less run. (The box is 5 yards in front of the center and 2 yards to the right of the Tackles or TEs)
- How to Run
In my humble opinion the lead blocking feature is garbage…I stay away from it. Instead use the normal run system.
The idea behind the run game is to drain the clock and keep the ball; this does not mean you have to get a first down on each run. Most people abandon their run game after they fail to achieve a first down with each run. This is wrong. Any run that is more than 3 yards is a good run. Think about 4x3=12 you need 10 yards for a first down or 3x3=9+1 =10, if you can’t get 1 yard off a qb sneak you have issues. This means while running you shouldn’t be in a hurry. You have some of the fastest and strongest humans on the planet at your disposal and you only need 3 yards…
divide the field into 3 horizontal parts when I run, the LOS this is where the linemen are, the LB where the LB are, and the secondary, where the DBs are…the first 2 sections are each aprox. 3 yards long and the last is the rest of the field. As you probably noticed then all you have to do is make it through the LOS and into the LB section to get a “good” run.
So, you have chosen a play and you arrive at the game screen. Now look at the orange arrow, obviously where you want to go, and the gray arrows where the blockers go. Now look at the D, if they are clogging the direction of the orange arrow, flip the play, if they are filling that gap to they have to have 8 in the box, which means….deep lob.
Now, hike the ball. Follow your blocks and hit the right hole, hold triangle while you go through the hole. With practice you will get 3 yards each time (with the right plays). Notice how I didn’t mention jukes or accelerate this is because in my opinion neither is necessary for a 3 yard run, unless you are running a vertical run (one which starts off sideways) then use these by all means.
What Runs to Use and When to Use Them:
The idea in madden is to get the ball into the hands of the RB as soon as possible. This means plays with the word dive and slam are often the best. Last year the SB HB Slam was probably the best running play. It still is… However, counters and cutbacks now work twice as well. This means that you no longer need to rely on the dive/slam.
Any Formation HB Dive/Slam
This is your base run. It will almost always lead to positive yards. Notice how it points between the Gs, try to follow that route.
Any Spread Formation (where the WRS are spread on across the Screen) Cutback
This isn’t as guaranteed as dive/slam but leads to bigger gains. Run 2 steps forward juke, or manually turn and go, make sure to cut before the tackle if the WR missed his block. If at any time it looks bad head up field. This works best with a fast back.
Any Tight Formation (Ex. SB Trips Bunch, SB Tight) Counter
Just run this up the edge, QUICK AUDBILE BETWEEN THIS AND a DIVE/SLAM DEPENDING ON WHERE THE D LINES UP, MIDDLE, AUDIBLE TO A COUNTER, EDGE, ADUBILE TO a DIVE/SLAM.
Any Dual Back Formation FB Dive/Slam
This will always be as good as HB Dive/Slam
Running on the Goal Line (less than 10 yards to the Goal Line)
Use these 3 together, always motion the FB to the edge. If the DBs pull in run the Strong toss, if not the QB Sneak. These 2 plays run together, with a PA create an almost unstoppable GL O.
- How to pass
With lead passing, passing is easy. The idea while creating a well-rounded passing game is to look for a route not plays, then plays with those routes. So, for instance the angle fade last year, was really good, so people looked for plays with the angle fade above all else. The same was true with “unbumbables”.
With the loss of pulling routes this is less true for some, but not me.
These are the Routes I use and Why:
This play is next to impossible to stop when done right. Wait ‘till right when the receiver breaks, and lead out, or if the D is faster than the receiver lead in. This always works for me.
Pretty simple, motion the RB till 1 arrow disappears and hike. This means that the RB will start the route from a starting “go” position…it essentiality does the same thing as the WRs running up to the LOS in arena football, gives them a head start on the defender. If you count to 1 then look at your RB you will notice he has turned towards the middle of the field, pass it now using precision pass in. His break was after he headed up field so he has the advantage on the D.
This play is great like the circle; it has a very strong “break” which further amplifies the RB’s advantage vs. the D. Just pass in right when he breaks, then mash the highlight stick
This play is dead simple, and could be run all game. Just hike, wait till the WR turns and bullet it. Keep it simple
This is my quick pass route. Starts out like a wheel route, but ends like a hitch. Keep a play with this route in your audible. Whenever the box is full (8 men) audible to this play for an automatic 10-15 yards and maybe 6. Then set your cone on the WR hike and press up and right. However, only do this when the CB lines up in a straight line to the WR or it is a “pick for six”.
Just as useful as it was last year. Weight till the receiver makes a break then throw (high and out for a fast WR, high and in for a tall one). Should be good for 10-15 yards.
Two ways this can be done, on one-on-one it can be sick on one-vs.-x it is 5-10 yards. The first way for one-on-one is to aim the cone on a back in the flats, pump, put the cone back on the WR tap the WR’s icon as lightly as possible while holding up, vs. 8 in the box this = 6 points. The other way is to wait ‘till the WR heads up field then pass in and up.
Always good for 6, with time. In this route you weight ‘till the WR turns then pump, or if the pressure is good pass, if you pump then wait till the WR turns and lob it (WR’s icon as lightly as possible while holding up)
Can be run 3 ways. Number 1 is, put a wr on a hitch and motion the back on flats out to the LOS and pass to whichever is open. Number 2 is to put one back on an out and the other on an in so they cross, this makes them rub giving you an easy pass. Lastly, 3 is to put one on an out and pass really quickly the LB can not catch the RB.
This will always get 2-3 yards with a tall TE. Just hike and lob.
These are the Routes I combine:
Hitch and Streak or Wheel
Put the short out on the WR closest to the sideline, pass to him when he breaks.
Deep Post and 10 yard Hitch
The should open each other up just watch.
Out/Slant and Wheel Route
The should rub leaving one open.
Angle Fade and hitch/streak
They also rub watch for the open man.
The should rub leaving one open.
The Streak or C-route cross twice don’t miss your shot.
Out slant and In slant (or out and In)
Any 2 Deep Crossing Routes on the Same Side and a PA
Hike wait 1 sec and see who is open.
The WR will block for the TE.
The WR pulls either the flats DB or the RB’s man
These are designed to beat the bump-and-run. Any blue/delayed route does this, doesn’t allow the DB to bump. I am to lazy to look now. I use these when it looks like the D is blitzing along with a quick pass or wheel route. Really screws with people who rely on the bump.
These are the Formations I use
Creates great rubs and good for running.
See tight for passing, cutback works well here
Good for dives stretches field, creates mismatches, often a 3rd string WR is better than a 3rd string CB
Great for running and rubs, HB angle in this formation is great.
Good for sweeps and rubs.
Just a side note, double juke (use the highlight stick and juke opposite ways quickly) and watch the D, don’t try on kick returns
Getting 5 yards every few Drive
Hike the ball and head forward between the G and C right away, good for 5 yards almost always, don’t forget to slide. This is only good in moderation.
