| A few days ago, while playing Assassin's Creed 2, my PS3 shut off on it's own. Minutes later I turned it back on, scrolled through the menu for about 10 minutes, I think I was watching some videos, then I started AC2 back up... and minutes later, it cut off again.
I never got passed the user selection screen after that. The nature of the problem makes me think IT HAS TO BE the power supply. If it was he bluray, AC2 wouldn't have worked the 2nd time. If it was the Hard Drive then the ps3 wouldn't have started up at all the 2nd time. Right?
The power supply is the main cause to all troubled PS3s. So, I just purchased a new power supply from http://vpgames.com/ (cuz even though you can quick pay using paypal without signing in, on ebay, you have to sign in and i havent signed in to paypal for years, so i didnt remember the address i registered with, or the bank card i used).
I am a sucker, so I did spring for 2nd day air. I'm hoping it will be here by friday, and at that time I can easily remove the casing from the ps3, and replace the old power supply with the new one.
After that, I need everyone to cross their fingers and hope it will work just fine and dandy. With no problems in the near future. I am fairly confident this will fix everything, as the power supply is an easy thing to replace and it seems that almost everytime someone gets a YLOD it's because of the power supply.
If this doesn't work... I don't know when I could ever get another PS3.

| today's the day. i'm hoping i ordered the correct part, the power supply, which will arrive today. when it does, i will immediately put it in, its only a matter of minutes to open up the PS3 and remove what i think is a dead power supply. then i will put in the new one, close the case. and just hope.
just hope.
EDIT: well its the right model no. for sure. so again, the only worry is whether or not it's the power supply. like i've said, with the nature of the problem, i feel like it is the power supply. but i dunno, maybe it's got other problems, or maybe something happened while it's been off these past few days... aeh, im just nervous it won't work.

| installed. vpgames is pretty cool. they gave me a $3 gift card (woohoo, but its better than nothing). and along with the invoice they include a return form, in case its not what i needed, which is pretty cool. one of the pins on the 5pin plug on the power supply was bent, but that was easily fixed with a small screwdriver.
i closed the case. plugged in the power supply. plugged in the internet cord (i like using my wireless for just my laptop). plugged in the AV cables.
im waiting, in my head im letting the power supply charge. i dont know if thats even possible, or needed, but hey, better safe than sorry.
i gotta do some s*** for work. then im gonna try it out. im seriously hoping its right now.

| im on the cpu and gpu. i've found a video for a YLOD fix. the guy says he believes 90% of the YLODs are caused by over heating of the ps3 which causes the sawder (sp?) to melt and the cpu and gpu seperates from the board.
the first time i opened up my ps3 (to look for the battery to fix the y2k-like bug), i couldnt get the motherboard out completely. well this time i was like **** it, and got it out. and now i see my cpu and gpu.
they look bad. now i think THIS might be the problem. but ****, i was wrong before. as you can tell, i wasn't 100% it was the power supply, and turns out it wasn't. now im 99% sure this gpu cpu thing is the problem.
i mean they look like an old car battery with battery acid corroded all around it.
i'll need to buy some thermal compound and rent/buy/borrow (well im not gonna buy one) a heating gun.
who knows what the **** is gonna happen now.

| well. i continued my research, and found the heat gun/thermal compound fix is a temporary thing. i didn't see anyone who said it hasn't happened again after their fix (granted, some people wouldn't find the need to post this), but i did find people saying that they did the fix and a few months later it happened again (including the guy who made one of the videos about how to fix it).
so, im not gonna turn this into a fixed expense. im gonna cut my losses and buy a new one in the near distant to very distant future.
most people have recommended paying $350 for a 250 GB Slim. but im kinda on the fence about it. its like, if im gonna spend $300+ then i might as well spring for an extra $50 for all that extra space. but on the other hand its like, will i EVER use 250 GB?! thats a s*** ton of space, for real. i mean on my 40 GB i had like 10 dynamic themes, 4 full albums, 1 movie, 1 game, and like 8 demos, and i assume i could have put more on there, but i didnt have anything to put on.
so i might get the 120 GB for $300 just to save that little bit of money because i probably won't use that extra space.
not sure. i'll probably do some research.

| Go ahead and get the 120 gb slim eggz...that's what I got for 299 dollars plus the tax......my slim is working fine and all....sony told me the main reason why they made the slims is because it is hella cheap for them plus they made the slims to combat the ylod....the fat boys got the on/off switch in the back and the slims don't....matter fact, flipping that switch in the back of the fat boys without turning off the system properly can cause the ylod.....on the slims you won't have that problem....but there is no such thing as a perfect system....but so far so good. I love my slim.... | |

| yeah i read about that. i was kinda disappointed. i mean the switch isnt a big deal, except my fat ps3 froze a lot during MAG - not really other games. and the only way for me to turn it off was with the switch, so what do i do without it? unplug? thats probably not much better. i guess i just gotta hope my s*** doesn't freeze with the new system.
the thing i REALLLLLLLLLY dont like, is the fact that the touch style Power/Eject buttons are gone. i loved those! those buttons are smart as hell, theyre awesome. im actually feeling pretty comfortable with electronics now, i wish i could install the old touch Power/Eject style to the new slim. but i wont be fucking with the slim for a llllllllllong time. until the warranty runs out.
but yeah, yo don thanks for the support. its been a pain in the ass.
HERES THE NEW HOPE:
today im gonna go do some yardwork at my parent's house for a little extra cash (theyre selling their house soon and want to do a lot to get it looking good). i also canceled my car insurance policy cuz my car died awhile ago and ive been borrowing vehicles. so im going back on my parents insurance (which, because i have a bad driving record, will likely save me $100 or so a month).
bills are due next week. so im gonna do all the addition and subtraction, figure out how much money i'll have on the 1st.......... and if its enough............. ill be buying a new ps3 this weekend.

| My PS3 is sounding pretty rough right now too when I am playing games, not so much when I watch movies though. Just sounds like it is working harder to spin the disc and it freezes sometimes when I'm playing. I have to cross my fingers every time I start my PS3 up. Just contemplating when it does go out, should I pay the $150 for Sony to fix it, or just buy the Slim? | |

| Well chris, you can pay the 150.00 to get it fixed, but sony will most likely give you a refurbished ps3...in which I had gotten a refurbished one from them before....if you do that, I will give you at least a year to a year and a half before the one sony gave you breaks down....when that happened to me, I said the hell with it and got a slim.....I haven't heard of any kind of mechanical type breakdown of the slim so it is pretty much safe to say they have a very low probability of failure vice versus the fat boys.... | |

| well its still early to say the slim is better. who knows whatll happen when the slims turn 3 or 4 years old. but hopefully they learned from the YLOD on the fats, and made em better.
but yeah chris, i decided to just buy a new one because i know whether i fix it or get a different fatty, ill have the same problem again, eventually.
