 Stripping/Protecting the ball?

So, I've been playing madden for a while now, but I'm new here. I know all the controls and stuff, but I have a question about using the strip/protect buttons. When I am trying to do one of these, do I click the bumpers as fast as I can, or do I hold them down? A friend of mine seems to think you are supposed to click the bumpers quickly, but I'm not quite sure. Thanks for the help.
