formations mean and do?

hey guys i have a question what does these formations mean and s*** i dont kn alot about defese i use the 4-3 playbook on defense and dont kn wat formation is used for what can someone help me out?

I also would like to know this info too. I do see alot of ppl saying to use different formations to stop and beat plays, but I really don't know what those formations mean at all.

A good rule of thumb for begginners is:

1-2 Wide receivers - Base D (46, 43, 34)
3 Wide receivers - Nickel
4-5 Wide receivers - Dime or Quarters

Nickel means that you have 5 DB's on the field instead of 4 which is what you have in your base D. Dime means that you have 6 and in Quarters you have 7.

Just to add to what he said the #'s everyone keeps refering to such as 34,43,46, ect... are refering to the # of players at a specific postion.

Take the 4-3 for example. You have 4 down linemen, 3 linebackers, and 4 DB's.

The 3-4 on the other hand. You have 3 down linemen, 4 linebackers, and 4 DB's.
